Regional Community Forest

Location: Around the Humboldt Bay region, from Ferndale to Trinidad

Funding Organizations:

Cooperating Agencies:

Project Date (Y-M-D):

The goal of the project is to study the development of a Humboldt Bay Regional Community Forest (HBRCF). The overall objective of a regional community forest program is to establish a system of forestlands immediately adjacent to Humboldt Bay region communities that provide:

- A sustainably-managed ‘buffer' of forestland between residential neighborhoods and industrial forest operations;

- A significantly improved ability to restore coastal stream habitat by reducing sediment inputs and addressing habitat needs;

- An emphasis on management for public access in lands immediately adjacent to population center communities, making outdoor recreation and stewardship opportunities much more accessible to people of all incomes, ages and abilities;

- A management system that engages residents in decisionmaking; and

- The potential for the managing entity to, over time, generate income with which to address unfunded public access and stewardship needs, as well as to have a mechanism in place to accept and manage remainder (from developments) and/or open space lands.

The intended outcome of RCAA's effort is a feasibility study that will provide information about operational needs, costs and revenues, example models, community interests and an analysis of potential management entities such as a municipality or a non-profit land management entity.
