Objectives of this project included providing assistance to South Fortuna Elementary (SFE) and Redwood Preparatory Charter School (RPCS) as they transitioned to sharing the same campus. These objectives were accomplished by conducting a Walkability Assessment to garner public participation and identify safety concerns and potential solutions to increase safety for students walking or rolling to SFE and RPCS, increasing safety and decreasing traffic congestion near the campus by clearly defining drop off and pick up procedures and communicating the process to parents/caregivers, developing a Walking Map with recommended routes, and providing support to administration and PTA to conduct encouragement events such as Walk to School Day and classroom walking/biking competitions. Through this project, NRS was able to assist the City of Fortuna prepare a grant application to the State’s Active Transportation Program that has since been recommended for full funding. Infrastructure improvements, along with Safe Routes to School education and encouragement programs, will be included in the project.
